SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
What is Supported Employment?
Supported employment is a service that:
- Enables people with disabilities to work in their community and earn a wage.
- Focuses on a person's abilities.
- Provides the supports needed to be successful in finding and keeping a job.
Am I eligible for CIC Supported Employment Services?
Yes, if you:
- Are at least 18 years of age.
- Have a disability, which prevents you from finding or keeping a
job on your own.
- Have financial sponsorship or if you have the means to pay for
your services.
Who pays for my Supported Employment Services and how do I
enroll?
If you are sponsored by one of the agencies listed below, that agency
will pay for the cost of using CIC's employment services. They will
contact CIC for you to get services started.
- Community Care of Portage County (Family Care)
- Portage County Health & Human Services
- Division of Vocational Rehabilitation
What can I expect while I am enrolled in CIC Supported Employment
Services?
The first step is to explore the world of work through a process called
an Assessment. During that time staff will help you:
- Explore your job interests and skills.
- Visit local companies to learn about different kinds of jobs.
- Participate in a paid work experience to learn about a specific
job.
- Learn how to look for a job by completing applications, job
interviewing, etc.
- Learn about what you are good at and what you might need help with
on a job.
- Figure out how you will get to work or how wages might affect your
social security benefits, etc.
The next step is looking for a job. During that time staff will:
- Help you identify businesses where you want to work.
- Contact businesses on your behalf.
- Assist you to prepare for interviews and complete applications or
resumes.
- Meet with you regularly to review the results of your job search
and to plan additional contacts.
Once you are hired, staff will provide ongoing support that might
include assistance to:
- Learn your job duties.
- Get to know your co-workers and supervisors.
- Learn and maintain good work habits and social skills.
- Get to and from your job through a variety of transportation
options.
- Get needed job accommodations or assistive technology.
